To measure windows for blinds correctly, choose the mounting method first, then record the width, height, and usable depth. A small error can affect fit, light coverage, and daily operation, especially with custom blinds. Inside-mount blinds sit within the window recess. Outside-mount blinds cover the wall or trim around it. The same window will produce different order sizes for these two methods, so decide before entering any dimensions.

Choose a flat section of wall or trim above the opening. Both brackets need a solid mounting surface. Mark the planned top edge with a pencil, then check it with a level. Leave enough room to install and remove the headrail.
