What Are Roller Shades?

Bringnox motorized shades and blinds

A roller shade is a popular and straightforward window treatment. It consists of a single piece of fabric attached to a tube or roller at the top.

This type of shade features simplicity, minimal profile, and clean lines.

Bringnox roller shades are available in some timeless styles:

How Do Roller Shades Work?

While the mechanics are simple, the performance is sophisticated.

A modern roller shade system typically works in one of three ways:

  1. Clutch/Chain System
Pulling on a beaded chain or clutch system causes the internal mechanism to rotate the tube.
It allows you to stop the shade at any point.
  2. Spring-Loaded/Cordless System – You simply pull down on the bottom rail to lower the shade and push up to raise it.
A spring mechanism inside the tube manages the tension to keep the position.
  3. Motorized System (Electric/Automated) – A battery-operated or hardwired motor is housed inside the roller tube.
When activated by a remote, or smart home system (like Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit), the motor quietly turns the tube effortlessly.

These are the ultimate electric roller shades for convenience and smart home integration.

How to Install Window Roller Shades?

  1. Mount the Brackets – Decide between inside mount (shades fit inside the window frame) or outside mount (shades hang over the frame).
Hold the brackets in place and use a pencil to mark the screw locations. We recommend pre-drilling pilot holes.
  2. Attach the Brackets – Secure the brackets using the provided screws. Make sure the brackets are level and firmly attached to the frame or wall.
  3. Insert the Shade – Locate the pin on one end of the roller shade (the control end) and the spring-loaded end on the other.
Insert the pin end into its bracket first, then push the spring-loaded end into the opposing bracket until it clicks securely into place.
  4. Test Operation – Pull the shade down and raise it up to ensure smooth operation.
For electric roller shades, remember to test the remote or app function.

How Do You Measure for Roller Shades?

The way you measure depends on different mounting methods.

Inside Mount:

Width: Measure the width of the window opening in three places (top, middle, and bottom). Use the smallest of these three measurements.

Height: Measure the height in three places (left, center, and right). Use the longest measurement.

Outside Mount:

Width: Measure the exact area you want the roller shade to cover. We usually add 3–6 inches to the window width to ensure maximum light coverage.

Height: Measure from where you plan to install the top of the shade (the roller) down to the bottom rail to sit (usually the windowsill or base of the trim).
